Ecostorm

Ecostorm is a dialoguing tool that supports the development of sustainable destinations. It takes the form of a workshop held at the destination and draws participation from all key players in that destination. The outcomes of Ecostorm are statements, commitments, recommendations and implementation plans.

Ecostorm mission

Ecostorm’s mission is to facilitate dialogue on existing and emerging approaches to the development of sustainable destinations that create value for nature, people and enterprises.

How Ecostorm works

Ecostorm discussions take the form of presentations by speakers; fishbowl discussions that tackle issues that emerge from the presentations, breakout group sessions where issues are discussed in depth; and from these discussions, key statements are developed and recommendations made. From these recommendations, participants commit to action and an implementation plan is developed to guide sustainable destination development.

Ecostorm is a continuous process with three discernible stages:

Planning is a diagnostic stage of Ecostorm that utilises case studies, research and such to make informed choices about destination development

Benchmarking discusses sticky issues and sets standards for destination development. It is the stage of the Ecostorm process that treats the diagnosis achieved in the planning stage and observes the reactions to treatment.

Evaluation consolidates lessons learned from the first two stages into guidelines with potential policy implications. It reviews the results of the entire process.

Basecamp Foundation has held three Ecostorms in community conservancies since the tool became operational. The outcomes of these sessions were:

2008: Planning Ecostorm which gauged the size of conservancy, type of engagement, type of tourism practiced, institutions involved, marketing and management options

2010: Benchmarking and addressing sticky issues such as bed night fee, campsite location, governance and grazing access in conservancies.

2011: Guidelines were developed which indicated the best practices to adhere to.
